Handmade brooch depicting the facial mask found on a Viking Age runestone that was discovered in Aarhus, Denmark. Masks were a common motif believed to protect against evil. The inscription on the runestone memorializes a man who died in a battle. Translated to English, it reads: "Gunnulfr and Auðgautr and Áslakr and Hrólfr raised this stone in memory of Fúl, their partner, who died when kings fought."
